Downtime Patient Verification (DPV) works with our NetSafe business continuance product, which ensures that the latest patient information is available in the event of an HCIS downtime or a system failure. Using that information, DPV can generate and print bar-coded patient ID wristbands which can then be scanned against that patient’s paperwork for a correct match.

Q: What is the primary benefit of the Downtime Patient Verification solution?
A: DPV ensures that you have the right patient, the right patient paperwork and the right medication – three of the critical medication “rights.” Because it utilizes bar code scanning technology, it eliminates manual entry that can cause errors. NetSafe DPV also ensures that the “wrong” piece of paper isn’t accidentally referred to – a major potential issue if you print out eMARs in advance of a downtime.

Q: What is the Downtime Patient Verification workflow?
A: It’s exactly the workflow your clinicians are used to. You scan the wristband, then scan the downtime copy of the eMAR with the patient barcode to validate the right patient. You can then scan a bar code for medication and the dosage to verify that everything matches.  DPV will stop you if there is any inconsistency.

Q: Can I feed the information back into my HCIS?
A: Yes you can! You can feed the Downtime MAR with the patient bar code into a scanner when the HCIS is back up and index the form to that patient. We have been asked about feeding discrete data from NetSafe DPV to the HCIS, but this is difficult because data is often frequently annotated and multiple signatures are required on the form.

Q: What are the other benefits of NetSafe besides Downtime Patient Verification?
NetSafe allows you to automatically capture reports from your HCIS and then push that information to local workstations. Reports are stored on those workstations either as PDFs or discrete data and can be accessed by users via secure login. Data is encrypted through the NetSafe delivery process. Because you determine which reports are delivered to which locations, NetSafe allows complete control over who is able to access PHI during a downtime. Plus, you get complete audit logging. NetSafe gives you the ability to determine the frequency at which reports are captured and distributed, ensuring that critical patient data is kept as up-to-date as possible even during an unplanned downtime.
