Upgrading From MEDITECH MAGIC to MEDITECH 6.0

Founded in 1949, Beverly Hospital in Montebello, CA is a 224-bed acute care, not-for-profit hospital serving the residents of Montebello, Pico Rivera, Monterey Park, El Monte, Whittier, East Los Angeles and surrounding communities. Its team of health care professionals supports a medical staff of over 300 physicians.

To fax reports from the MEDITECH Healthcare Information System (HCIS) to various departments connected with the hospital, Beverly Hospital used Interbit Data’s NetFax for the MEDITECH MAGIC platform. With the upgrade to MEDITECH 6.0, Beverly Hospital needed to find a replacement product compatible with the new HCIS, but did not need to look far, as Interbit Data provides a version of NetFax that supports MEDITECH Client-Server and 6.0 platforms.

“We were already using Interbit Data and were able to continue using this product with the MEDITECH upgrade,” said Susan La Beau, Systems Analyst, Information Technology for Beverly Hospital.

Beverly Hospital initially discovered Interbit Data and its NetFax solution in 2006 when conducting research for a product that would allow faxing of reports to multiple groups with different fax numbers at one time. The hospital looked at other, comparable products, but selected NetFax for several reasons.

“Interbit Data had a good track record, the product is compatible with MEDITECH and we found many other MEDITECH sites also use them,” explained La Beau. “They have a lot of good products and support has been great”

Continuing Report Faxing Capability With MEDITECH Upgrade

Beverly Hospital has been using NetFax for MAGIC since 2008. To make it compatible with the MEDITECH 6.0 upgrade, Interbit Data integrated two modules, Distribution Wizard and Desktop Fax, which incorporate capabilities offered in the NetFax C/S and 6.0 product to make it a solution fully supporting MEDITECH 6.0. Beverly Hospital went live with MEDITECH 6.0 in November 2009.

In addition to being able to fax to multiple groups with different fax numbers at the same time, Beverly Hospital finds that NetFax allows users to see what was sent by providing an image of the fax. This image confirms the fax was received and gives users the opportunity to make any corrections or changes. Users can design their own cover sheet for the fax based on their needs, and incorporate departmental or organizational-specific data on the cover sheet.

Saving Time With Faxing Multiple Reports Simultaneously

Beverly Hospital has approximately 60 people in lab, radiology and medical staff using NetFax to send reports and patient test results across the hospital.

“NetFax is easy to use and makes the process of faxing information much easier,” said La Beau. “People can send faxes simultaneously and not have to wait for another person to finish, so there is a time savings. There is no backlog of faxes because faxes move much quicker and smoother.”
